Week 7
DATE 11, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26
8:30-10:45PM
MYMOON, WILLIAMSBURG
OK CUPID CONNECTION
"A 25-year old?!" was a recent subject line from Kathleen's email after she read the last post. I had to reassure her that it was for the bet. Basically, with the stakes I'm facing, I'm not going to turn most dates (within reason) down. If some cute, smart 25-year old asks me out, I'm not going to say no. I figured, he lives in Williamsburg, probably a total hipster. We can at least talk about music.
He picked Mymoon, a Turkish restaurant/bar near his apartment. The entry is set back from the street about 40 feet, and I'm imagining it's a great place to hang out with when its warm. He's waiting outside, we introduce ourselves, and go in towards the bar. We order drinks, and he starts talking about his recent travel/interviews. He's just finished up his PhD in Economics from NYU, and has research/teaching offers from Stanford, Northwestern, and Princeton. He's leaning towards Stanford. I'm sitting there feeling like a slacker. When I was 25, I had just moved to San Francisco after aimlessly staying in Blacksbsurg for 1 1/2 years after graduation, didn't have a job, and was staying on my sister's couch. Obviously, I was able to 'make something of myself' over the years, but this guy seems way ahead of his 25 years.
Definitely not some total Williamsburg hipster.
Although he's got all that going for him, I still felt like I was holding up the conversation. After all these dates, I've gotten pretty adept at small talk, and getting people to talk about themselves. But at a point, come on. Ask me some questions! He seemed like a shy person who probably has a hard time talking to new people. At one point, he quietly told me that I was much prettier in person (not that my profile photos were bad).
We finished our drinks, and left to find a cab. He had suggested that we walk to one of the car service places or he could call me a car service from his apartment (nice try). Ended up finding a cab on Bedford. He asked if he could call me, and then gave me a kiss goodnight.
He's a nice guy, but then again, he's 25.

plentyoffish.com
Even though I've been experiencing quite a bit of success on okcupid, I thought I'd check out a new site, to see what's out there. I had seen an ad for plentyoffish.com at the West 4th A/C station, and later in the afternoon Shana mentioned that a friend of her's had tried it and had a lot of luck. Seemed like I ought to check it out, right?
Oh. My. God. Yes, I've had lots of responses - 11 guys in a matter of hours. No, I'm not remotely interested in any of them. Most of the messages were just unimaginative of the "Hi. Hoe are you?" variety. That's his spelling mistake, not mine. But then there were these two:
"hey how you doing i pass for your page and i like what i see you look very cute and sexy and beautiful i hope we can continue talk and i want to know if you single kisses"
and
"Damm your gorgeous!!! I would so drink wine off your feet anyday"
Grammar? Spelling? Granted, I'm not the best speller, but I can spell damn and know that anyday is actually two words.
I think I will stay in the heavenly themed cupid site and stay out of the water.
Speaking of cupid, I've got a date with a 25 year old on Thursday. He was very attracted by what was in my profile. Don't know if he noticed I'm 39. So we'll see.

Week 6
This has been an exhausting week date wise, and not completely enjoyable. There was not only the worst date ever, there was also what ended up being the most emotionally draining date ever. I did at least wrap up the week with two guys I could have a normal, fun conversation with. Will probably go out with each of them again even if it is just to meet up with someone who, at least on first impression, doesn't have tremendously heavy baggage that they're lugging around trying to convince someone else to help them carry their shit around. Here's the wrap-up:
See post 'The Bad Date' for Week 6's first date.
DATE 9, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 18
7:00 - 10:15PM
THE EAR
OK CUPID CONNECTION
Let's just say, from all of the messages, texts, and IM's that I got from this guy in the days leading up to the date, I should have known he was a little off, and a bit on the needy side. But it was flattering. And he was funny. Let me just tell you that there is a difference between seeing it in print where it is somewhat fictional, and dealing with it face to face when it is sitting across a dining table from you in one of your favorite after-work drinking establishments. Especially when its broadcast in an outdoor voice kind of way. I never feel comfortable around loud talkers;i ts like hanging out with my brother-in-law.
The most glaring part of the conversation - he referred to his ex-wife as his wife. Repeatedly. I'm pretty sure he actually is divorced - after the stories he told me about her, at least I hope he is - but there seems to be something he just can't let go of, and that's not something I really want to get near.
He's one of those guys who looks good on paper - attractive, Ivy League educated, owns a business, owns a boat, has a dog - I figured maybe I could look past the craziness. But when someone is popping pills during dinner (back injury), has endless stories of bad luck, nearly spits venom when talking about his (ex)wife, is really self-deprecating to the point where you actually believe he's right about this stuff and it's not just being said in a joking manner, and finally tells me that I'm way out of his league and he doesn't really get why I wanted to meet him, I really have to start evaluating the situation.
At this point, I'd had three glasses of wine. He drops the question that I hate to even think about - Why are you single? I start to tear up. I blame it on the alcohol, and that the conversation had been so emotionally draining. In retrospect, I now have come up with another reason - I'm starting to realize that I'm still single because I continue to attract guys like this, and allow them into my life (granted, this guy is an extreme case).
I wish him luck, just not with me.
DATE 10, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 19
7:00 - 9:30PM
LA LANTERNA
OK CUPID CONNECTION
After this week, I was dreading yet another date. I just really, really, REALLY wanted to go home, crawl up on my couch, and watch some Netflix movies that have been sitting on top of my TV for the last month. But, too late to cancel, or at least postpone.
I walked over to Greenwich Village, walking through NYU territory where people were still participating in the occupation of one of the campus buildings. I was hoping all the way over that the guy would cancel. Didn't really know much about this guy, which after the first one this week, was somewhat worrisome. I find the cafe, and the date is standing outside. We introduce ourselves, he seems normal, so we go inside.
We order drinks. I'm a bit hungry, so we look over the food menu, and also order some snacks. Talking to him is easy, we discuss travel, my recent trip to Abu Dhabi, work, art, architecture, food, among other things. He went to school for Electrical Engineering, but recently has trained to be a pastry chef. He's worked at The Modern, and now wants to open his own chocolate shop. We discuss chocolates - yum, yum, yum.
We finish up our food, then go for a walk. We walk through SoHo, and past one of his favorite chocolate shops on Thompson Street. We turn onto Broome, and he tells me that Marie Belle actually gets chocolates from Jacques Torres (shocking!).
This guy is nice, and it was a relief to be out with someone who didn't seem to have any glaring issues, or angry stories about his exwife, or problems with smart women. It made me feel better about this week, and that not every guy on this site is a nutjob.
He emailed me the next day, saying he had a great time, and suggested dancing on Saturday. I already had plans, but I'll probably see this guy again.
DATE 11, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21
7:00 - 11:20PM
GOOD WORLD / RICE
OK CUPID CONNECTION
We had agreed to meet at Good World at 7PM, and I'm waiting. And waiting. All the other dates I've had have been at the destination before I got there (other than the chef, who texted me saying he'd be late) so I was starting to get worried. Alright, it was only 7:15, he was coming from Williamsburg, its a Saturday, the trains are always iffy on the weekends. He walks in at 7:20, very apologetic, so I relax. He's immediately easy to talk to, like talking to a friend. He's English, he's well dressed (finally, someone who's but some effort in his appearance - the last couple really have not). He likes shopping.
We had just gotten in touch with each other on Wednesday. He's leaving on a business trip to the West Coast on Sunday for ten days, so he wanted to meet before he left. Luckily, I was free on a Saturday. Typically, I really like keeping Saturday open to hang out with Seaport people after a day of maintaining those boats. Its dirty work, sometimes I can leave smelling like pine tar, or solvents, so I don't want to risk meeting someone for the first time being either exhausted from the work that day or smelling like tar. Some people like it, but you never know.
After a couple of drinks, we decide to get some food. Since we're close to Chinatown, we decide on Malaysian food. He's spent some time in Indonesia, and wanted to show off his language skills. We ended up going to Rice instead, which was also delicious.
After dinner, we started walking towards downtown to each find a cab. This was a really fun date, and I didn't feel any anxiety at all. He seemed nervous at the beginning, and said so. I'm still puzzled as to why I make people nervous. Luckly, he got over that pretty quickly. We kissed goodnight, and he said that he'd give me a call when he got back from California.
This week has been full of OK Cupid guys. I've found this site pretty interesting (aside from the first two dates this week, although I guess you could say they were 'interesting' in their own way. Interesting doesn't necessarily mean pleasant). From what I've heard, its also a great site for women - many more men then women, many more choices. Just this morning, I had three messages in my inbox, and two quickmatch requests that I also found attractive. I only have five more dates to go (the administrator of the bet rejected my request to count number seven as two dates, I told him I'm still counting it as two, but now the total has to be sixteen), have one set up for next Saturday, so as long as I can turn at least four of these contacts into dates, I'm done.
As long as all of them end in a kiss. Right now, I've already hit the maximum of 35% of the dates (five dates) that haven't ended in a kiss. I still have to achieve 10 kisses to win the bet. I've got four weeks left, so if I need to fit in another couple of dates to get there I will.
See post 'The Bad Date' for Week 6's first date.

The bad date
DATE 7, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 16
9:00 - 11:30pm
PIANOS / ARLENE GROCERY
OK CUPID CONNECTION
This was the first OK Cupid date, and I really hope they aren't all this bad. We set up the date before I went to Abu Dhabi. I should have known better when this guy suggested February 16th, telling me I'd be his birthday date. I guess I had hoped that he was going out with a group of people, and that I'd be his date.
I was wrong. I got to Pianos, and found him at the bar. He seemed either already drunk or high, not sure which. We went to the upstairs bar, and ordered drinks. After a couple of routine questions, I'm realizing we have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IN COMMON. Except Risk. He said he likes playing Risk although he hadn't played since he was a kid. Some of the highlights:
1. Music: No idea who the Pixies are. Favorite band at the moment: Sixx: A.M. That would be Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue's new album.
2. Age: Suprised I was older than him even though its posted on my profile. Made a face when he realized that I'll be 40 next month when he asked when my birthday is.
3. Job: Asked me what I did for a living. When I answered 'Architect', he seemed to almost cringe, and said, "Oh, you're one of those smart women" like I just told him I had a devastating comunicable disease.
4. Sports: He claims to be a huge sports fan, mostly football, Jet's season ticket holder he claims very proudly. I tell him I like soccer. Again, the face! Adding, "What country are you from?" Again, the look like I've got a disease with absolutely no cure.
5. Favorite Actor: He asked me who my favorite actor was - Clive Owen (it was a toss up with The Cloon.) He had no idea who he was.
6. Favorite Actress: Jennifer Aniston because he really likes Friends. He imagines himself as Chandler Bing. I hate that show.
7. Likes Dan Brown books.
8. Racist: We were discussing family, I told him my sister lived in Peekskill. Again, he made a face, saying, "There's lots of blacks there." I must have glared at him, becuase he back pedalled, claiming he wasn't a racist, in fact he has some black friends.
I'd have to say numbers 2, 3, and 8 were enough to get me to walk out of the bar. Unfortunately, only about 30 minutes had expired, and I had to spend at least 90 more minutes for this date to count.
I knew it would probably be a touchy subject, but I asked why he had decided to take out a total stranger on his 35th birthday. He got pretty defensive, saying, "As opposed to what? Being out with friends?" Well, yeah, that would be the obvious alternative. He admitted he didn't really have any (guess he forgot he already told me he does have some friends of color?), and said that the few friends he had were busy.
This entire time, he's poking fun at the bar patrons and wait staff. The place is on the Lower East Side, most people are dressed like your average hipster, and he thinks this is all very strange.
At this point, you're probably thinking, where is this guy from? Some hick place with no culture? Answer: grew up in Brooklyn.
He kept trying to put his arm around me, and then started rubbing my back. I asked what he was doing, he replied that he was trying to get me to relax. Believe me, touching me is not going to do it. He also took my arm, and started putting it around his neck, and I immediately retrieved it. We're at the 75 minute mark, and its about time to head over to Arlene Grocery for Rock n' Roll Karaoke. I didn't think I'd ever be so excited about going to a karaoke bar, but from what I've heard, there's a live band, and its loud, which means it'll be a lot harder to hear him talk.
We walk the couple of blocks over to Arlene Grocery. The jackass isn't even wearing a coat, and is complaining its a bit cold. I ask him why, and he tells me that he drove into the city. I never realized that driving precluded wearing appropriate outerwear.
The show is just getting started when we arrive, which is a relief. Its a pretty interesting show, closer to Rockband that typical karaoke. The comments about the crowd continue from his mouth, but at this point I'm ignoring him - something disparaging about the shirtless guy with the mohawk, another thing about the color of some girl's hair. I tell him mine used to be that color. Blank stare. A little while later, he says about the girl with the purplish-red hair, "She either needs to lose some weight or stop stepping on my foot." I give him the second look of death of the night, and I think he finally realizes we should call it a night.
We leave the bar, I see a cab, tell him I'm going to grab a cab home. He offers to give me a ride home, I repeat that I'm just going to take a cab. He shrugs, telling me its up to me. Damn straight it is. I should have taken that attitude much earlier in the evening, and taken this evening as a loss.

WORST DATE EVER.
Really. I mean ever. It should count as two. It will count as two. I was so upset after this date, I called Chey at nearly midnight to ask her if I could come over. I had to talk to someone, and she lives two blocks away. Tears in explaining this date. Too much excruciating awfulness to write about tonight. More tomorrow.

Week 5
Nothing. No dates. Zilch, zip, whatever other names for zero you choose to use. It was a busy work week, upcoming trip to Abu Dhabi and all. I needed a break anyway, all this dating is hard work.
OK Cupid!
Again, in a moment of dating advice brilliance, Kathleen steered me to OKCupid.com. A friend of hers at work at tried it after meeting only creeps or boring guys on Match.com (sounds familiar). She went out with four guys, and has been dating one of them of a year or so. Sounded promising, so I signed up, looked around for a bit, and wasn't disappointed. I waited for the responses to start filling my inbox.
The one thing I like about the site is the Quick Cupid (or maybe its Fast Cupid). They run through various profiles of men, and you rate them on looks and personality, then click to the next one. Shopping for men! So easy! If you rate someone four or five stars on either category, they send the person an email telling them someone rated them highly, and they then get to see your profile which is mixed in the first five or so profiles that they are shown. If they also rate you highly, they send both parties an email saying so. It takes some of the pressure off contacting people since you know they're already somewhat interested, or at least think you're attractive.
One guy who I thought was cute I actually downgraded after reading his profile where he insists women who contact him be either hot or easy, and they have to like golden showers. Who does this guy think he is? Bret Michaels?
Anyway, the first profile I looked at was this guy who's profile name was Ezbo. He was cute, sarcastic, well educated, spoke of his misspent youth, but...he lived in Mt. Holly. New Jersey. I had no idea where that was so I moved on. A couple of days later i get this message from him:
Well, here we are again. I log on and see the dearth of emails from interesting women I look and suprisingly spot someone has stalked me recently.
I read the profile and BANG... holy crap....she likes soccer.
I went to the World Cup in 2006 and saw a number of games, I am a huge fan. All the guys write and tell you how beautiful, interesting, smart, etc etc.
I know it, so do you. Unless they are all dumb, blind, and/or against a woman having a brain (which I hear is a suprisingly common problem these days) in which they skipped that part.
I noticed all that too. I appreciate the intelligence above all.... but Soccer? Wow, never saw that coming.
Then I notice it....NY. That second letter in the state designation.
They do it to me all of the time, send me perfect matches from 110 miles away on a good day. However, never occurred to me that I would be the faraway guy in someone elses queue.
Well... suffice it to say I (like many sane men I assume) think you are great. At least you present an attractive version of yourself in the profile. Never know... you could be nutty as a Snickers (like me)... but you seem great.
So thanks for looking at my profile. Made me feel a bit suprised and happy that someone as interesting as you would look. B-U-T it is of course lousy that geography precludes me from even trying to come up with an evil plan to get you to be interested in me.
Sooooo just wanted to say thanks for looking, good luck to you, you seem great, and while I am not likely the one.... there will be someone out there who appreciates you.
All sarcasm and silly jokes aside.... you really seem a catch (and I mean that in a totally non-patronizing-anti-masogonistic-guys-don't-"catch"-women-love's-a -team kind of way) and I am sure you will find someone better than me to spend time with.

Since you never emailed me I know you agree with at least HALF of that last sentence... hope the other half comes true.
I myself am getting tired.
How can I not reply? I do. We email back and forth, and I have convinced him to come to the city and meet me. Turns out Mt. Holly is about 100 miles away. That's really going to suck if we end up liking each other. We'll see, either Friday or Saturday he's going to come into the city. I'm excited about this one.
In addition to him, I have at least one other date this week from this site - rock and roll karaoke at Arlene's Grocery tomorrow.
Alright. I now have to catch up on all of the TV I missed while in Abu Dhabi last week.
